Event 1: Workshops
Join writers from across cultures for these workshops. The WrlCE program aims to further the knowledge, creativity, skills and cultural perspectives of writers from the Asia-Pacific region.
Time: Tuesday 12 April, 2016
Venue: Room 301 & Room 305, School of Foreign Languages Building
Workshop 1: Telling Stories (9am – 11am)
Michele Lee and Maggie Tiojakin
This workshop presents an opportunity for participants to explore different approaches to storytelling, with a focus on language, imagery and characterisation.
Workshop 2: Contemporary Approaches to Fiction (11am – 1pm)
Mary Rokonadravu and Eliza Vitri Handayani
This workshop focuses on the nature of fiction writing and techniques such as character, voice and structure.
Workshop 3: Contemporary Approaches Nonfiction (1pm – 3pm)
Larry Ypil and Ara Sarafian
This workshop will allow participants to explore the traditions and principles of nonfiction storytelling such as form, narrative and technique.
Event 2: Readings and Panel Discussion

DAI Fan, Alice Pung and Lawrence Ypil in conversation with Francesca Rendle-Short
This public event will feature a panel of distinguished writers from Australia, China and the Philippines, who will discuss the contemporary vitality of writing around the world today. This event will provide a platform for writers from around the world to discuss their critically acclaimed work and engage with local readers and writers.
Participants include DAI Fan, a Chinese writer who is an essayist and novelist; Lawrence Ypil, an essayist and poet from Cebu, Philippines; and Alice Pung, an acclaimed Australian writer who writes across genres and who is published as a novelist, memoirist, children’s author and essayist.
They will be in discussion with Francesca Rendle-Short, co-director of WrlCE, and a writer of nonfiction and fiction.
The WrlCE Program aims to further the knowledge, creativity, skills and cultural perspectives of writers from the Asia-Pacific region.
