Result for the Second National Creative Writing Contest
The Sun Yat-sen University Center for English-language Creative Writing is pleased to announce the result of the Second National Creative Writing Contest. The judges for the Contest are Sammani Perera and Andrew Marlowe Bergman who are graduates of creative writing at Miami University, USA.
The judges evaluated the submitted pieces based on their experiences in writing, editing, and publishing creative writing in the United States. The criteria they adhere to are: a good beginning, conciseness, effective use of dialogues and metaphors, accurate punctuation, good balance of showing and telling, proper use of point of view, etc.
It is from the above criteria that the works of the contest were read and evaluated, just as how works in the workshop at Miami University are evaluated. Accordingly, the awards go to:
-In Third Place, Bowen Wang for "Spicy Soup."
-In Second Place, Claire Zheng for "Love."
-the First Place Award goes to Chenoa Choo for "The Metamorphasis."
Each of these pieces combines sharp, vivid details with strong, direct recollections and reflections on life, culture, friends, and family. As each of these young writers continues to work on and develop their voice writing in a language which is not native to them, they should feel confident in their ability to relate their experiences and observations to others. Through their words, the reader can taste what Bowen tastes, feel what Claire feels, and grow as Chenoa grows. The world needs young writers such as these who produce works of clarity and compassion to fill our hearts and minds with empathy for one another.
As we recognize these young writers we also encourage them to keep working and developing. To push the bounds of what they write, and how they write it, to challenge themselves with each new undertaking and to become insatiable in their desire to enhance their talents and skills in writing. As a way of providing special recognition to these students writing in English, the winning pieces was published in February, 2016 on Miami University's Creative Writing Blog.
